Middle school teacher charged with possession of child porn resigns

JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY - A teacher and athletic director at Trexler Middle School was arrested and charged with 15 counts of child pornography, according to school officials and warrants.

According to the warrant, 55-year-old William Edwardson of Jacksonville was arrested around 1:00 a.m. Saturday by the State Bureau of Investigation. Edwardson is accused of having multiple videos or images of children on his computer.

Now Onslow County School officials say he resigned and voluntarily surrendered his North Carolina Teaching License as of Monday, February 9. School system spokesperson Suzie Ulbrich says, "At this point we do not think any of our students or employees were involved, but we are continuing to investigate this matter."

According to Edwardson's Trexler Middle School website biography, Edwardson is an 8th grade social studies teacher and athletic director for the school.

One mother told us this comes as a shock. She chose to only go by her last name, to protect her child's identity.

Miss Davis said, "if you met him, you would never in a million years think that you would hear news like that about him...ever. He seems genuine, caring, all about the kids."

Her child was coached by Edwardson and would have been coached by him again during the soccer season.

He always took an interest in the children's lives, she said

"He still comes to his games and he's not even on his team anymore and no one in a million years would think he would do something like that because he's always trustworthy. He's at all the Trexler games and a big supporter of all the kids," said Davis.

Edwardson was held in the Onslow County Jail under a $250,000 bond.

Edwardson appeared in court Monday morning. NewsChannel 12 will have more information tonight at 5 p.m.
