MOREHEAD CITY, CARTERET COUNTY - A memorial service will be held for Morehead City Police Officer Christina Della Cava.
According to the department's Facebook page, the service will be held at the Glad Tidings Church in Morehead City on Friday at 11 a.m.
Officer Della Cava's vehicle is parked outside the police department. Individual memorials at that site are also welcome.
People in Morehead City are remembering an officer who died over the weekend.
NewsChannel12's website and Facebook have been flooded with messages and kind words for the officer's family and the Morehead City Police Department. Officer Christina Della Cava died of an illness. Specifics of her condition have not been released.
"It saddens me to lose her at 27 years old and it's sad for her daughter losing a mother," said acquaintance Barbie Griffith.
Condolences and messages for her family and the Morehead City Police Department have flooded Facebook and other social media. A sign on Highway 70 near the front of town flashes a message in her memory. It says "MHC heart's mourn Officer Della Cava."
Della Cava was recently engaged and had a been a Morehead City Police Officer for about 3 years. People she encountered in the community say she will be missed.
"She was very professional. She loved her job and you could tell she took pride in it," said barbershop owner Jerry Wilson.
Officer Della Cave would patrol the area, where his business is located, on foot often.
"You see officers come through and they walk on the sidewalk...she opened that door. She walked in to me and said "hi". That's character," said Wilson.
Officer Della Cava leaves behind a fiancee and a young daughter. She was 27 years old.
