NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY - Friday the 13th is commonly referred to as an unlucky day. But for Mega Millions lottery ticket players it could be the opposite.
Lottery officials say Friday's Mega Millions Jackpot is worth $425 million. The lucky winner has two options on how to cash the ticket in. A winning ticket holder could take the money as an annuity, and receive yearly fixed payments. The alternative would be to take $228.2 million dollars at cash value.
Lottery officials say this lottery is the second-largest Mega Millions Jackpot since the game began in 2002, and the fifth largest lottery jackpot in North American history.
NewsChannel 12 decided to go and ask local businesses if they've been busy selling tickets. Three gas stations located on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. say they saw a big boost in business because of the Mega Millions Jackpot.
"We've seen a very big increase in lottery ticket sales," said James Stain, an employee at the Hess Station. "Especially with the Mega Millions being as high as it is. Having the lottery is a great source of income because it brings people to the store. And if their going to get lottery tickets, sometimes they'll get more than lottery tickets they may get a drink or some gas."
The winning ticket numbers for Friday's Mega Millions Jackpot is 19-24-26-27-70 with Megaball number 12.
