The family of a fallen Marine will be awarded the Silver Star Medal at a church ceremony today, in honor of his heroic actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.
Gunnery Sgt. Daniel J. Price, with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command based at at Camp Pendleton, died alongside Camp Lejeune Special Operations Marine Gunnery Sgt. Johnathan Gifford. Gifford was awarded the Purple Heart and Navy Cross.
The award will be presented to Price's family during a ceremony at a church in Michigan at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Price, a Holland, Mich., native, was serving as a team member with Special Operations Task Force-West, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom when his element was engaged by insurgent personnel.
"The Silver Star is given for conspicuous gallantry and valor. Gunnery Sgt. Price's actions were truly and extraordinarily heroic, and we are proud that his actions are honored and recognized. We will always be inspired by the actions of our fallen brothers and we will strive to operate at a level that honors them," said Capt. Barry Morris, MARSOC Public Affairs Officer.
"Gunnery Sgt. Price's courage, dedication and sacrifice inspire us on a daily basis to help others, to cherish our freedom, and to try to make a positive difference in the world," Morris said.
