Marijuana video shown in Carteret Co. classroom sparks parent concern

NEWPORT, CARTERET COUNTY - A video highlighting Colorado's marijuana industry is shown in one Broad Creek Middle School class and some parents say it's inappropriate.

The CNBC documentary is titled "Marijuana in America." On Tuesday, students in one Broad Creek Middle School PE/Health class watched the full 45-minute video as part of a class lesson.

The teacher says the purpose was to encourage students to make positive choices and stand up to peer pressure.

Parent Suzanne Lewis watched the video herself and disagrees saying that "positive message" was lost.

"It had people using the drug freely and showing it with bongs and rolling them and then putting it in candy and making it really enticing for people to  want to use the product," Lewis says.

Carteret County Superintendent Dan Novey also watched the video and says it was NOT appropriate  for students.

Marijuana is still illegal in North Carolina, but four other states nationwide have legalized the drug for recreational use including Colorado, Washington, Alaska, and Oregon.
