Man wanted for 7 years arrested, jailed under $3.4M bond
A Jones County man is being jailed under a $3.4 million bond for allegedly committing a slew of drug, assault and other crimes over a period of seven years. Investigators said the suspect then led authorities on a multi-county chase, and even pointed a gun at the officer who tried to arrest him.
Cruz Costilla Abney, of Hadley Collins Road in Maysville, is facing multiple charges involving drugs, drug sales, possession of firearm by a felon, breaking and entering, receiving stolen goods, assault inflicting serious injury, and resisting public officer. According to deputies, Abney committed those crimes in Onslow County over the past seven years and repeatedly taunted officers who tried to arrest him.
On Wednesday, Abney was driving in Maysville when a police officer spotted him at about 4 p.m., investigators said. The officer tried to pull Abney over, but the suspect allegedly led a high-speed chase until he reached his old neighborhood in Onslow County. Abney then got out of his vehicle and took off on foot, investigators said.
Before the Abney entered a wooded area, he allegedly pointed a hand gun at the pursing Maysville Officer. But by that time, Onslow County deputies, Jones County deputies, Jacksonville Police, Highway Patrol troopers, and a Highway Patrol helicopter were in the area to back the officer up.
A friend of Abney arrived at the scene and drove the suspect away, deputies said. But law enforcement officers from several agencies continued their hunt and arrested him the next day, on May 9, in Smithfield in Johnston County, according to investigators.
Abney was placed in the Onslow County Detention center on a $3,411,000 bond.
