LENOIR COUNTY - Deputies said a 64-year-old man used the leg of a table to fight off two intruders who assaulted him and his wife in their Lenoir County home.
According to the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, 64-year-old David O'neal and his wife were sleeping inside their home on Water Chestnut Drive, west of Kinston, when two masked men entered at about 2:25 a.m. Monday.
"It was like a nightmare," said Susan O'neal, the wife of the home. "I just screamed for help."
O'neal woke up and confronted the intruders, deputies said. One of the suspects attempted to hit O'neal on the head with a hammer, which may have been used to enter the front door of the home, according to investigators.
Another suspect pushed O'neal's wife down to the ground and held a pair of scissors to her throat, the couple said.
"I tried to grab for the family jewels and make him hurt a little bit, so maybe he would leave me alone," Susan O'neal said.
The intruders demanded money, but their efforts were thwarted when O'neal removed a leg from a table and hit the suspects on their heads, deputies said. The intruders then left the scene.
"It was just a scaring time," David O'neal said. "I call it a war starting because we started fighting. I got hit on top of the head. I picked up the leg off the eating table and i went upside his head with it."
The two robbers were both struck behind the head by David O'neal before running out the house. They didn't get away with any of the couples things.
A K-9 unit was not able to track down the suspects, said investigators. Detectives were also canvassing the neighborhood to get more information.
The intruders are described as two men of unknown race who are in their late 20s. They were wearing dark hoodies and dark-colored sweatshirts. Investigators said one of the men is taller than the other, and both were injured during the home invasion.
