HOOKERTON, GREENE COUNTY - A man who suffered severe burns in a Greene County house fire has passed away.
According to Emergency Services Director Randy Skinner, Guy Potter died Thursday at the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
The fire broke out at the home on William Hooker Road in Hookerton just after midnight Saturday, investigators said.
"I heard the alarms going off so I opened my bedroom door and the living room was full of smoke," said Kelly Radeka, the homeowner. "It was so black in there I couldn't get any lights on. I couldn't get past the doorway. It was so hot."
Radeka, her 11-year-old son and her mother did manage to escape through the front door. But Potter, the boyfriend of Radeka's mother, was still inside, trapped in his bedroom.
Radeka said she could hear Potter's cries for help.
"The window started exploding and there was stuff popping out of it," Radeka told NewsChannel 12.
Radeka said she ran to the window on the other side of the room and found Potter struggling to escape out the window with flames on his back. Radeka said she then pulled Potter down from the window and grabbed a garden hose.
"He was hot. You know, his clothes had melted and I was just spraying him," Radeka said.
Potter was taken to the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill with third-degree burns across his body, officials said. He was in critical condition until he passed away Thursday.
The home suffered severe smoke and water damage, said fire crews. The family is unsure when they will be able to move back in. Radeka said the home was the first she ever owned. She bought it in May 2012, and had been living in it for just more than a year.
At last check, investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire. But they said the blaze was not suspicious.
