A former Onslow County resident has been sentenced to prison for the robbery of a taxi driver.
U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced Wednesday that 26-year-old Carlos DeVaughn Varnell was ordered to serve 5 years in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
On Aug. 15, Varnell pleaded guilty to the armed robbery that happened on April 30, 2012. According to police, a taxi driver was robbed in the parking area of a Walmart at 561 Yopp Rd. in Jacksonville.
Police said they pulled over Varnell later that day and found two firearms in his vehicle. Varnell and a passenger in the car were both arrested.
Varnell had been living in Jacksonville before moving to Mississippi, investigators said.
