One of two men charged in the murder of a retired pastor in Greenville has pleaded guilty.
Pitt County District Attorney Kimberly Robb said Tyrell Artis, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 60-year-old James "Jim" Carr (pictured right).
Artis was sentenced Wednesday to serve between 49 years and six months to 65 years in prison, said Robb.
Robb said Carr and his wife were asleep in their home on Cedarhurst Road in Greenville's Westhaven subdivision on Aug. 20, 2012. That was when Artis and another man, Shamel Brown, broke in and shot Carr, said Robb. Carr died at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Police said they believed robbery was the motive.
Brown is scheduled to appear in court on June 3 for murder and other charges.
