Greenville Police: Reported armed robbery was a hoax
One of the five armed robberies that happened in Greenville in one night turned out not to be a robbery at all, police said.
According to investigators, 44-year-old James Godwin claimed he was robbed at knifepoint by two suspects on Wednesday, May 1, as he was withdrawing money from the Wells Fargo ATM on Stantonsburg Road.
But evidence gathered by Detective J.A. Baxter, of the Greenville Police Department, showed that no robbery ever took place, investigators said.
Godwin was charged with making a false report and had agreed to surrender himself to police on Monday, officers said. But he never showed up.
Greenville Police said making a false report ties up already-limited resources.
