Man buried in sand on OBX beach dies

CAPE HATTERAS NATIONAL SEASHORE - A vacationer at a beach in the Outer Banks died after the sand he was digging in collapsed on him.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at a beach on Cape Hatteras National Seashore, between the villages of Salvo and Avon, said Cyndy Holda, a spokesperson for the National Park Service.

The 49-year-old male victim, from Fredericksburg, Va., was digging in the sand trying to connect two holes together. That was when the sand collapsed on him, Holda said.

The man was believed to be buried in about 5 to 6 feet of sand for about 10 to 15 minutes, Holda explained. Family, friends and bystanders tried to dig the victim out. but once first-responders arrived, they could not revive him.

The victim's identity has not been released.
