A Greenville orthodontist is preparing to ride his bicycle from one side of the country to the other, all for a good cause.
Dr. Dennis Ross said he will ride his bike from Atlantic Beach in Carteret County all the way to San Diego, Calif., a distance of almost 3,000 miles. The journey will begin at midnight on Sept. 26. His goal is to raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County.
If Ross can complete the trip in 11 days or less, he will be one of the five fastest cyclists older than 40 to ride from coast to coast.
"Weather is probably the biggest variable that will get you there in 12 days, or keep you from getting there until 17, 18 or 19 days," Ross said.
A tracking device will be attached to Ross' bike during the journey, which will cover 10 states, with terrain reaching altitudes of more than 9,000 feet. To track his voyage, visit his website, www.riding4areason.org.
Last year, Ross raised more than $90,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs by spreading the word about his cycling efforts. In May 2012, Ross biked from his orthodontics office on Arlington Boulevard to Key West, Fla. During the 1,200-mile trip, he stopped at Boys & Girls Clubs, met members, donated money, and talked with kids.
"My desire for you is to take this money and make yourselves successful," Ross told those he visited.
