VANCEBORO, Craven County - State troopers said three men were walking alongside a road when two of them were hit by a truck. One of those men died as a result.
Troopers said it happened Wednesday at 7:02 p.m. on State Route 1646, just west of Highway 17 in Vanceboro. Nika Smith, 41, Rodney Lancaster, 57, and D'Andre Koonce, all of Vanceboro, were walking west in the eastbound lane on SR 1646.
A pick-up truck driven by Justin Eure, 28, of Grifton was traveling west on SR 1646. Troopers said Eure's truck crossed the center line and hit Smith and Lancaster but not Koonce. Smith was killed and Lancaster was in serious condition.
Troopers said Eure then traveled off the roadway to the left, collided with a culvert and several trees. He walked away from the scene. Troopers said charges are pending in this case.
