GREENVILLE, Pitt County - According to Greenville Police, at approximately 2:44 a.m. Sunday morning, officers were in the 5 Points Plaza Parking lot downtown when they heard several shots fired from the direction of the Jarvis Memorial Church, across from GPD Headquarters.
A Greenville Police spokesperson says officers were on scene within seconds and observed a small black vehicle fleeing the area. They initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of 9th and Evans streets. A search of the vehicle produced a stolen handgun, as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the car, Kevin Christopher Hart, of Rocky Mount, was engaged in a dispute with other individuals in the Jarvis Memorial Church parking lot. At some point during the altercation Hart produced a handgun and fired several rounds.
A stray bullet struck a brick on the side of the Greenville Police Department, causing minimal damage, according to a spokesperson. Two unoccupied vehicles were also damaged by gunfire. No one was injured.
Hart was arrested without incident and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, discharging a weapon into occupied property, discharging a firearm within city limits, and possession of up to a half ounce of marijuana. He's being held at the Pitt County Detention Center under a $125,000 bond.
