Seventeen drug arrests made in 'Operation Summer Heat'

GREENVILLE, Pitt County - After a four-month investigation, the Pitt County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 17 drug offenders on Friday.

PCSO Sheriff Neil Elks talked about the arrests at a press conference, saying "Operation Summer Heat" was designed to take the customer base away from drug dealers. He said more arrests are still to come and that of those arrested so far, some are user while some are sellers.

"You can go anywhere to buy drugs - big or small communities, the drugs are there," Elks said. "Drugs and the destruction of those who are addicted and their families are not just felt here in Pitt County, it is felt in every county and city in our nation.

"The goal is to fight the drug demand at all levels."

The 17 individuals arrested had charges relating to cocaine, marijuana or heroin or some combination of the three.

Elks said three different communities within Pitt County had complained separately to the department's narcotics division about ongoing drug activity in their area, which spawned the operation.

In the light of this investigation and the separate announcement by Greenville Fire and Rescue of seven overdoses within 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday, Elks was critical of irresponsible physicians, saying the onus is on them to show increased caution when prescribing opioids and other high-level narcotics.
