WINTERVILLE, Pitt County - A house fire was reported early Monday in Winterville, according to officials.
Authorities with the Winterville Fire Department posted images and a brief news release to the fire to Facebook Page, Winterville Community Fire Department.
It reads as follow:
"Just before 4 a.m. this morning, Station 41 responded to the 2100 block of Vale Court in reference to a structure fire. Chief Heltzel (4120) was the first arriving unit on-scene and noted that there was light smoke coming from the structure in his size-up.
Firefighters used attack lines off of Engine 4101 to quickly contain the fire to the exterior of the home. For the next hour or so, personnel worked to check for extension and extinguish any remaining hot spots. With all hazards being removed, all firefighters cleared the scene around 6 a.m.
The homeowner, along with an alert neighbor, quickly realized there was a fire and dialed 911. At the same time, they used a fire extinguisher and a garden hose in an attempt to put the fire out. These quick actions and knowing how to use a fire extinguisher were extremely beneficial in minimizing damages. If you don't have one in your home or aren't sure of how to use an extinguisher, we encourage you to purchase one and spend some time familiarizing yourself with it!
We'd like to thank the firefighters of the Red Oak Fire Department, the Ayden Fire Department, and the Town of Winterville Fire Department for their assistance this morning!"
