Pamlico County announces string of drug arrests

BAYBORO, Pamlico County - On Tuesday, the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office announced a series of drug arrests made at the end of May and beginning of June in cooperation with the sheriff's offices from Carteret, Jones and Craven counties.

In all, seven individuals were arrested on drug-related charges.

On May 28, officers responded to a call for a drug overdose in Reelsboro, at a residence off NC 55. The individual, later identified as Kiersteen Popperwill, was given Narcam and transported to Carolina East Medical Center. She was later arrested following the execution of a search warrant of her home for possession of heroin, a schedule I drug. She was arrested and denied bond based on a parole violation.

On May 31, William Smith and Robin Smith, both of Mesic, were arrested following a traffic stop where Pamlico County deputies discovered 19 bags of heroin totaling 2.5 grams, 29 suboxone strips and nearly $500 in cash. They were both charged with possession with the intent to manufacture, sell or distribute schedule I and schedule III drugs, maintaining a vehicle in possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor child abuse. Each had a secured bond set at $15,000.

Also on May 31, investigators served a search warrant at the home of Edward Cowell and Melissa Henries at 16543 NC 55 in Stonewall following undercover drug buys of pills and cocaine at the home. Henries is charged with possession with intent to sell or distribute cocaine and Cowell was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, while more charges are expected in the case.

Henries' secured bond was set at $30,000.

On June 2, investigators made a traffic stop in Reelsboro after getting a tip that New Bern resident Basir Humphrey would be traveling from New Bern to Reelsboro with heroin in his possession. During the traffic stop, investigators located approximately nine grams of heroin and $473 in cash.

Humphrey was arrested and charged with trafficking of heroin and had a secured bond set at $100,000. A passenger in the car, Rayna Novash, also of New Bern, was also arrested, charged with conspiracy to traffic heroin. Her bond was set at $5,000 secured.
