Charity golf tournament for guide dogs

Charity Golf Tournament

MINNESOTT BEACH, Pamlico County - At the Minnesott Golf and Country Club union workers hit the links to raise money for guide dogs.

Local Lodge 2297 raises money year round for Guide Dogs of America but this is their first golf tournament. Guide dogs are trained to help the visually impaired have easier lives.

Theodore McNeal believes guide dogs are more than just assistants.

"These dogs are very special," says McNeal. "They're working dogs but when they're not working, they're just great companions."

The Lodge's goal is to provide guide dogs free of charge to anybody who needs one.
By hosting poker nights and other fundraisers, they've already been able to pay for two and are using this tournament to work towards a third.

Rory Brown, Lodge 2297's chairperson for Guide Dogs of America, is proud of the work he and his colleagues have achieved.

"I was part of it," says Brown. "Because of me, because of us somebody received a free dog that can help them have a better quality of life.

Brown says a guide dog can cost more than $40,000 and they hope with this tournament that they can raise $10,000 of that cost.
