JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Dietrich Schmieman has been identified as another of the servicemen from Camp Lejeune who died in the military plane crash in Mississippi on Monday.
He's the fifth person from Camp Lejeune who has been identified by family and friends since the accident. There were 16 servicemen who died, 15 of them Marines. Nine of those Marines were from Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y. while the other seven -- including sailor Ryan Lohrey -- were from Camp Lejeune.
The Spokesman-Review newspaper reports Schmieman was a member of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion stationed in Camp Lejeune. He was part of the group traveling to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma for pre-deployment training before the plane crashed without reason in a soybean field in Mississippi.
“He was friends with everybody,” Michael Carosino, a friend of Schmieman, told the newspaper. “He was always ready to go at it, whatever we were doing, just hype everyone up.”
The Rev. Corey Smith of Richland Lutheran Church in Schmieman's hometown of Richland, Wash., was his youth pastor for many years. He described Schmieman as a wonderful person.
"“He was always extremely respectful, just always kind and polite,” he said. “He had that little twinkle in his eye. He wasn’t a troublemaker by any means, but you could tell that he liked to have fun.”
