HUBERT, Onslow County - There are several groups in Onslow County celebrating with a fresh influx of funding this week.

Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary in Hubert is one of five charities in Onslow getting recognition for the work they do in community along with a big check to help boost those efforts.

Employees of Veterans United Home Loans in Jacksonville made the $10,000 check deliveries to the various charities this week. Beyond the Wildlife Sanctuary, the Onslow Women's Center, Museum of the Marine, USO of North Carolina-Jacksonville and Habitat for Humanity all received checks.

"This helps the people it helps the Marines, the families, it helps their kids, the animals, it helps everyone," Toni O'Neil of Possumwood Acres said. "I can't tell you what this does...."

The sanctuary was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew last year, and so the extra funding is seen as a godsend. O'Neil said donations like this allow for the purchase of more medication, supplies and animal food, but most of all, simply keeping the doors open to take in more animals.

"It just touches our hearts and so to come out in the community and see the reaction and see the lives that we change by doing this, no feeling can compare," said Phyllis Gatlin of Veterans United Home Loans.

The charities were chosen by employees of Veterans United Home Loans. The donations are part of the company's $1 million it is giving to charities across the country in 2017.
