RALEIGH - The mayor of Swansboro has been arrested on tax charges.

John Scott Chadwick, 61, of 101 Oyster Bay Drive in Swansboro, had charges filed against him by the N.C. Department of Revenue on Thursday. He's facing five counts of Willful Failure to File Return, Supply Information, or Pay Tax.

Arrest warrants allege Chadwick was required to file North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for tax years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, but willfully failed to file the returns with the N.C. Department of Revenue. Chadwick is employed with Cedar Point Landscaping in Swansboro.

Chadwick appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a $2,500 secured bond, which he posted. A first appearance was scheduled for October 25 in Wake County District Court in Raleigh. The Department's Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh also investigated the matter.

Board of Elections Director Rose Whitehurst told the Jacksonville Daily News the arrest doesn't impact the upcoming municipal election and early voting, which begins next week. Whitehurst said even if Chadwick called and asked for his name to be removed, they couldn't do it.

The Town of Swansboro is still assessing the situation, Town Manager Scott Chase told the newspaper.
