JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Jacksonville Police have released the name of the man found dead at Woodlands Park early Friday.
William Joseph Clifton, 48, of Richlands, was found dead with an apparent gunshot wound, according to Jacksonville Police. The Jacksonville Daily News reports Clifton is a former deputy with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office who started with the department on Feb. 5, 2007 and resigned on Feb. 15, 2016.
“His name was initially withheld pending notification of his family” said Captain Ashley Weaver, JPD Investigative Services supervisor. “This is an isolated incident with no safety threat to the public."
The Jacksonville Police Department has added a $2,500 reward for information about the shooting. This brings the total possible reward to $5,000.
NewsChannel 12's Merrilee Moore was on scene and spoke with a resident of the area, who said she heard sirens as early as 6:30 Friday morning for a good 10 minutes up and down Dorris Avenue. A black car was towed away from the area with two unmarked police vehicles trailing it at about 10:45 a.m. Several police officers, however, remained on scene, with roads blocked off to traffic.
"Just quite surprised to hear of anything like this happening," said Sebrena Sweeney, who lives nearby. "I can't think of any time I've ever even heard of anything like this happening in this neighborhood."
