JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - After the heartbreaking news of the possible discovery of the body of 3-year-old Mariah Woods, many came together Saturday night for a memorial to remember her.
The community came together at Dawson Cabin Road to say their final goodbyes to Woods. Many gathered as candles flickered alongside piles of stuffed animals. They shed tears and lots of other emotions.
Officials said Saturday they believe the body of 3-year-old Mariah Kay Woods was found in Pender County, according to the FBI. Early Saturday morning, the Onslow County Sheriff's Office and the FBI announced Earl Kimrey, 32, was taken into custody Friday by investigators at the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. Kimrey is the live-in boyfriend of Mariah Woods' mother, Kristy Woods.
"It could have been anyone's child,” said Brandi Dunmore. “At least she's going to be brought back home where she needs to be.
“It warms my heart to see everybody come together and come together as a team and look for her and do what we had to do to find her and bring her back.”
Now, they hope those responsible for Woods’ death get what they deserve.
“It's a horrible thing that happened,” Dunmore said. “Justice need to be brought.”
Community members out here Saturday said they will never forget little Mariah Woods because over the last week, she has become one of their very own.
