JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - One family is grieving the loss of their pet after an attack by a neighbor's dogs.
Onslow County Animal Services is now investigating the case. Kirk Lanier said he can't believe what happened to his little Chihuahua, Odi. He said he had to watch helplessly as two pit bulls attacked his dogs as he walked them down a trail near his home on Burgaw Highway last Thursday around 8:30 p.m. That's when he said the pit bulls attacked.
"I have been here for a long time and I have never had to go through this," Lanier said. "It was kinda hard to hold both of them. This one right here got lose out of my hands but the other one one of them latched on him and I kicked as hard as I could and he wouldn't let go until he died."
The case is under investigation by Onslow County Animal Services to determine if the owners of the pit bulls violated any laws and what penalties they could face.
"Owners are required to have control over their dogs whether on a leash or verbal command," said Howard Martin of Onslow County Animal Services. "It's not clear if the owner was even observing the incident at the time it occurred. It's possible the dogs were out roaming in their yard .
Lanier also said he's concerned about something else, little children who play in the area. He said he is worried one of them could become the next victim.
The owners of the pit bulls were unavailable for comment. Animal Services hopes to have the case wrapped up as early as Tuesday.
