JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Onslow County Animal Services is investigating the shooting death of a dog.
Officials got the call on Monday, March 13 around 4:30 p.m. about a deceased dog that appeared to have a single gunshot wound to its head. Animal control officers found the animal in the wood line off West Ridge Road, in the area near Murrill Hill Road, in Jacksonville.
The dog appeared to be a black and white pit bull mix. Officers found the dog with a faded, red leash connected to zip ties around the animal’s neck. There was no other identification on the dog.
Onslow County Animal Services' Director Howard Martin said little is known about what happened to the dog and whether charges will be pending.
"You never know, what's happened or the result," Martin said. "All we have is an animal that had a gunshot wound to it that was left in the wood line. Was it an accident? Was it intentional? We don't know that until we can do an investigation."
