CAMP LEJEUNE, Onslow County - If you're near Jacksonville, you might want to head to Camp Lejeune for Base Fest Tuesday night.
At Camp Lejeune, the celebration will include live music leading up to the fireworks. A 21-gun salute kicked off the Independence Day activities on the case. It called attention to the sacrifices made every day to keep our freedom. It also reminded those of why we decided to fight for it.
"I have a handicapped brother," Sgt. Michael Kerr said. "He is three years older than me. And when I first looked into it, he started looking into it and he could not join because he was handicapped from the waist down."
It's a dream many service members pursue, all with one final objective ... to keep America free. Now, it's time to celebrate that freedom.
"The Forth of July celebration that we do aboard the base is something that everybody looks forward to," said Yolanda Mayo, Deputy Operations Officer.
"We have five great performers who will take the stage! We have the Muddy Magnolias, we have Temecula Road, Chord Overstreet - you might remember him from Glee - we also have Brett Young who is hot on the country charts right now and Billboard's wonderful wonderful Lifehouse."
Be sure to leave the fireworks and pets home (unless you have a service animal). The fireworks will kick off at 9:30 p.m. unless there is lightning in the area. If that happens, they will try again Wednesday.
