KINSTON, Lenoir County - Kinston Police say a fight in the parking lot of UNC Lenoir Hospital Tuesday night was related to a shooting earlier that evening of an 18-year-old man.
KPD spokesman Woody Spencer said officer responded to a shots fired call at approximately 8:06 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Barton Avenue. When officers arrived, they were told by witnesses that 18-year-old Golontae Brock was the victim of the shooting and had been taken to UNC Lenoir Hospital.
Officers discovered numerous shell casings at the scene and determined property damage was caused to a house at 606 Barton Avenue and 1408 Pollock Street.
Brock was shot in the arm and neck, but Spencer said his injuries appear to be non-life threatening.
Residents in the area where the shooting took place, who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals, said they believe the shooting was gang-related. Not only that, residents tell NewsChannel 12's Nate Belt, but Brock was not the intended target, so concern in the area is that the shooters may return.
Area resident Hope Brown, the only person in the area who would speak on record, said she heard seven or eight shots Tuesday evening.
"I ducked down," said Brown, who has lived in the area for nearly two decades. "I hit the floor."
Compared to some neighborhoods in Kinston, Brown said the sound of gunfire isn't all that common where she lives. Looking out from her house last night, she could see individuals carrying the wounded man.
"I saw them coming around with another young man - they were carrying him," she said. "He looked like he might have been hit - I didn't see blood or anything, but he looked like he was hit."
Less than a half hour after responding to the shots fired call, Kinston PD officers were called to UNC Lenoir Hospital for reports of a fight in the parking lot. Six men from Kinston - Javon Jennings, 22; Marquan Harris, 20; Kvon Williams, 17; Raekwon Kinsey, 20; Shaquan Harper, 19; and David Carr, 19 - were arrested for disorderly conduct and booked into the Lenoir County Jail. Spencer said the department believes the fight was connected to Brock's shooting.
KPD is asking anyone with information about either incident to call Kinston PD at (252) 939-3160, the TIPS LINE at (252) 939-4020 or Lenoir County CrimeStoppers at (252) 523-4444.
