Kinston man arrested in connection to dog fighting ring

KINSTON, Lenoir County - A Kinston man has been arrested after officials found a wooden built dog fighting ring and two injured dogs on his property.

On Saturday, October 21, at 11:00 p.m., officers with the Kinston Police Department responded to 430 Sherman Street in reference to a dog fighting complaint.

Upon arrival, officers located two injured dogs on the property, as well as a wooden built dog fighting ring. When officers approached the residence, a crowd of people fled into the nearby woods.

Officers then arrested the resident, Hal Tyler Jr., for Felonious Dog Fighting. He was placed in the Lenoir County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond.

The two injured dogs were seized and transported to a local animal hospital for treatment. One of the dogs was treated for injuries and turned over to the Lenoir County SPCA, while the other dog received treatment for its wounds, including 48 staples to the face and neck area.

Both dogs appear to be on pace for full recovery, officials said.

Officers also seized three more dogs from the property. Those dogs were not injured and are being held for safe-keeping
