GREENVILLE, Pitt County - In recognition of National Bike Month, North Carolina Active Routes to School, Safe Kids Pitt County and the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program at Vidant Medical Center are sponsoring a bike-to-school day event Wednesday morning.
According to a press release from Vidant, each year, approximately 26,000 children and adolescents endure traumatic brain injuries from bicycle-related accidents. Helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by at least 50 percent; however, only 15 to 25 percent of children 14 and under usually wear a bicycle helmet. The NC Bike helmet law requires children under age 16 must wear a helmet at all times while riding a bicycle.
The students will tart on the corner of Flora Dr. and Stillwood Dr. in the Langston Farms neighborhood at 7:30 a.m.
