KENANSVILLE, Duplin County - An accident involving a Duplin County Schools bus from E.E. Smith Middle School happened just outside of Kenansville on Monday.
In a press release from Duplin County Schools, the bus was on Hwy. 24 East just outside Kenansville when the accident happened. There were 29 students and a bus driver on board at the time. Officials said seven of the students and the driver were transported to Vidant Duplin Hospital to be assessed.
The remaining students were transported back to E.E. Smith Middle School, where they were checked out by the school system’s lead nurse. Students’ parents were notified and all of the students who were transported back to the school were either picked up or transported via bus to their homes.
“We are truly thankful to God that all of our students and our driver appear to be doing well this afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the driver of the other vehicles,” said Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan.
“On behalf of our Board of Education, I want to thank all of the emergency response crews and law enforcement and Vidant Duplin Hospital who assisted (Monday) afternoon. Safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. Our Transportation Department and other system staff did an excellent job with this situation. We are blessed in many ways.”
