Prostitution sting nets charges for 10 in Craven County

NEW BERN, Craven County - The Craven County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 10 people who are facing numerous sexual charges, including human trafficking. One of those arrested is a Pamlico County commissioner who also worked as a Craven County Sheriff’s deputy and Bridgeton Police officer.

The sheriff’s office received a call on Dec. 2 about suspicious activity at the Comfort Suites at 1006 Old Cherry Point Road in New Bern. Officers responded and discovered possible prostitution activity. This call came after several other calls in the past for similar complaints that have resulted in arrests for drug activity, among other minor charges.

Craven County Sheriff Jerry Monette instructed an investigation to be opened into possible human trafficking in Craven County. Two arrests were later made:

110 Grant Court, New Bern

Charges: Human Trafficking-Adult victim for sexual servitude, promote prostitution for profits, and promote prostitution-advance

Bond amount $20,000

-- Alvin Ray Wright: DOB 07/02/1970

4809 Creekside Drive, New Bern

Charges: Human Trafficking-Adult victim for sexual servitude, promote prostitution for profits, and promote prostitution-advance

Bond Amount $10,000

Investigators later received information on other possible sexual assaults happening. The sheriff’s office posted an ad on Backpage.com as a means of catching individuals who were soliciting prostitution. On Dec. 18, deputies arrested the following:

-- Kevin Smith DOB: 01/27/1971

812 Sherman Point, New Bern

Charges: Patronize a Prostitute, Intimidating a State Witness, First Degree Forcible Rape, Common Law Robbery

Bond: $1 million

Smith faces two charges of first degree forcible rape, with a bond of $1 million for each charge. He is currently in the Craven County Jail. The investigation continues into his activities.

The sheriff’s office also obtained warrants for two others for human trafficking:

Charges: Human Trafficking, Adult Victim for Sexual Servitude

-- Jimmy Stephon Stokes DOB: 3/26/1989

550 Mary Street. Chocowinity

Charges: Human Trafficking, Adult Victim for Sexual Servitude

Five other people responded to Backpage.com posts and criminal summons were issued, each for attempting to patronize a prostitute.

-- Kevin Donald Curtis DOB: 10/2/1965

-- Roy Riley DOB: 5/2/1993 (no photo available)

Heath was a part-time law enforcement officer with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, a part-time officer with the Bridgeton Police Department and is currently a Pamlico County commissioner. The sheriff’s office said in a press release Heath gave his resignation to the sheriff’s office in December before he was served a criminal summons for attempting to patronize a prostitute. He was maintaining a Law Enforcement Certification with the sheriff’s office, which has been terminated.
