NEW BERN, Craven County - A man wanted for a robbery charge in New York was arrested in New Bern Thursday for trying to rob a boutique.

It turns out he messed with the wrong person as the owner of Juliette's on Middle Street fought back and refused to let him rob her store.

Sandra Digges said Jerel Russell, 32, brought some items up to purchase on Wednesday around 3 p.m. Instead of buying them, he tried to rob her. That's when she stepped into action.

"He just stuck his hand out at me with a little sharp instrument and he said 'Open the door,' and I looked at him in astonishment and said 'no'," Digges said.

She then picked a necklace holder and began hitting him in the head.

"I was right behind him, I was getting him out of here and I opened this door and shoved him out of here," Digges said.

Russell was later arrested and charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and resist, delay and obstruct an officer. He was wanted in connection with a parole violation for a robbery in New York. He is awaiting extradition to New York.

"My defense mode came on," Digges said. "You're not doing this, this is my place, my nest and you're not messing with it."

She said if it happens again, she'll make the same decision.

"I feel awesome, I feel strong, I feel brave and I feel this place is love," Digges said. "I love New Bern and I'm not planning on going anywhere."
