HAVELOCK, Craven County - Thanks to Lowe's, the Havelock Boys & Girls Club will have a drastically improved look in time for the holidays.
Crews from Lowe's Home Improvement in Morehead City and New Bern are working to beat the clock on an extreme makeover project for the organization. The project began on Oct. 29 after an intense 2017 hurricane season forced delays. Now that they're back on track, you're seeing and hearing a lot of nailing, cutting, lifting and measuring.
"The vanities are going to be replaced. The painting has been done, mirrors, lighting fixtures, what's left is here and the floor, the vanities and the floor are left to be done," said Gerrod Green with the Havelock Boys & Girls Club.
Work includes padding the walls around the gym and replacing the basketball goals. An old, dingy storage cubicle even has a new look with a fresh coat of blue paint. The girls' bathroom has a new vanity counter, too.
"Right now, we are in the kitchen and what's going to take place here is the renovation of the walls, the ceiling and the floors, they are going to put in appliances as well as a deep sink, as well as an ice maker, deep sink refrigerator, all that stuff comes with the renovation," Green said.
The cost is around $20,000 once everything is done. But it's worth it to see the looks on the faces of the children who will return to the facility. Crews hope to finish all the remodeling before school lets out for the winter holiday break in late December.
