ATLANTIC BEACH, Carteret County - Firefighters confirm a 56-year-old-man died Saturday morning trying to save two teenage girls caught in a rip current in Atlantic Beach.
According to Fire Chief Adam Snyder, the Atlantic Beach Fire Department received a call around 11 a.m. of three people in the water needing help near the Henderson Boulevard access point. Chief Snyder said a 56-year-old man heard the teenagers crying for help and tried to save them, but got caught in the rip current and drowned.
According to Capt. Casey Arthur, one teen made it to safely to shore before they arrived.
"She was able to get in with assistance before we really got pulled up good to the scene and the other two were still in distress so we had lifeguards that are on staff with us enter the water," Casey said.
One of the teenage girls was transported to the hospital, but Casey reports she is in good condition.
NewsChannel 12's Nate Belt confirmed with the fire department that while the high rip current hazard flags were flying near lifeguard stands on other sections of Atlantic Beach, there were no lifeguards or flags in that particular area.
