Former animal shelter director indicted on embezzling charges

BEAUFORT, Carteret County - The former director of the Carteret County Humane Society and Animal Shelter is facing embezzlement charges after she was indicted by a grand jury earlier this week.

Candace Renee Christopherson, 42, was indicted by a grand jury on one felony charge of embezzling more than $100,000 from the Newport shelter. She was the director of the animal shelter from Sept. 2005 until Sept. 2016, when she resigned. She was in charge of finance and fiscal operations at the animal shelter.

Christopherson was arrested Friday morning and is being held in the Carteret County jail under a $50,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

As this case is pending adjudication in court, no further details are being released at this time.

Between January 2014 and July 2016, officials said Christopherson used the shelter's credit cards for personal or unnecessary purchases totaling more than $67,000. Investigators also found that more than $44,000 in cash generated by the shelter's activities wasn't deposited in the shelter's bank account between January 2015 and last September.

In a press release from the sheriff's office, Sheriff Asa Buck praised the investigative work of the North Carolina State Auditor's Office, the Sheriff's Office detectives assigned to the case and the District Attorney's office. The Sheriff also thanks the public for their patience during this investigation.
