MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - Two confirmed cases of canine flu over the past week have experts saying you need to get your pets vaccinated.
One of those incidents happened in Morehead City, the NC Department of Agriculture confirmed. The other dog was killed by the virus in Raleigh. Both dogs had recently participated in dogs shows.
Canine influenza is spread through close contact with infected dogs. According to Dr. David Bird with the Morehead Animal Hospital, symptoms include coughing, lack of energy, lack of appetite, fever and sneezing.
"The best thing to do is be proactive - get your dog vaccinated," Bird said. "And avoid close contact in dog parks, dogs that you aren't aware of their history, just stray dogs coming around, that sort of thing."
