MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - A 33-year-old man who Carteret County Sheriff's Office officials said suffered from "extreme mental illness" killed his father then himself Friday night in Morehead City.
According to a press release from Major Jason A. Wank, Chief Detective, deputies and members of the Morehead City Police Department responded to a call in the 1800 block of North 20th Street in Morehead City Friday night before 10:30 p.m. When officials arrived, they found a victim who was deceased and the shooter who was barricaded inside the residence.
The shooter was later located and was dead. He was armed with a small handgun after Special Response Team members made entry into the residence.
Officials said the shooter was Benny Earl "Buddy" Burney Jr. while the victim was his father, Benny Earl Burney Sr. Investigators said Benny Burney Jr. shot his father twice with a 38-caliber handgun before eventually turning the gun on himself. The situation was witnessed by the wife of Burney Sr. She is also the mother of Burney Jr. She was able to leave the residence unharmed.
The Carteret County Sheriff's Office wanted to extend its sympathy to the Burney family.
CORRECTION: NewsChannel 12 previously reported the incident was witnessed by the wives of both men. That is incorrect. The press release from deputies does not indicate that Burney Jr. was married. It states only his mother was witness to the crime. We apologize for the mistake.
