Report: Autopsy confirms prison sergeant beaten to death

GREENVILLE, Pitt County - An autopsy done on a Bertie County correctional officer killed by an inmate in April concluded what law enforcement officials suspected.

The Charlotte Observer reports Sgt. Meggan Callahan was beaten to death in the head with a fire extinguisher inside the Bertie Correctional Institution on April 26. Craig Wissink set a fire inside a trash can then hit Callahan in the head with a fire extinguisher she brought to put out the fire.

Wissink has since been charged with murder in Callahan's death. He was already in prison for murder. He was an inmate who has been in the prison since 2004 on a life sentence for murder in Cumberland County.

The newspaper reports Dr. Karen Kelly, a pathologist at East Carolina University, said the cause of death was "traumatic head injuries due to assault with a fire extinguisher." A representative with the medical office gave the newspaper the information on the autopsy, which was completed Tuesday.

Callahan, of Edenton, has been with the department since January 2012. She was promoted to sergeant in February 2016. A state funeral was held that included Gov. Roy Cooper.
