A lightning strike caused a fire that destroyed an Onslow County home Friday afternoon.
The fire was reported just after 4 p.m. Friday at 158 Stump Sound Church Road outside Holly Ridge, officials said.
The home was completely engulfed in flames when fire crews from five different departments responded, said officials. The residence had two stories, but the top floor collapsed onto the first floor during the blaze.
Three more fire departments were called in later to relieve the fire fighters already on scene.
"Coupled with the extreme heat that we have [Friday], along with the humidity, not so much the heat as it is the humidity-- it really drains the firefighters down very quickly," said Onslow County Fire Marshal Bryan Kelly.
Kelly said a lightning bolt that hit the second floor of the home caused the fire.
No injuries were reported. The couple who live at the home were at the scene taking salvageable items.
To help the couple who lost their home, call 910-328-3023. Kelly said the Red Cross was called in case the victims need assistance.
