KINSTON, LENOIR COUNTY - Police in Kinston are looking into three separate shootings that occurred on Sunday.
The first shooting was at 201 West Highland Ave., just before 11 a.m. Sunday. Sterling Smith, 26, was shot several times at his residence multiple times. He was transferred to Vidant Medical with non-life threatening injuries. Police are still looking for Jamell Howard, 26. He has a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
William Hamm said he had just come back from church when he saw his quiet neighborhood turned into a crime scene.
"I'm concerned because of the little kids be walking around in this neighborhood. With this kind of action going on you never know what's going to happen," Hamm said.
The second shooting happened at around 2:30 in the area of George Avenue and Stadiem Drive. In the area, officers found Khyric Alexander on a front porch on Stadiem Drive with a gunshot wound to his left arm area. A residence on George Avenue was also hit by bullets. There have been no arrests or suspects named in that incident.
Evangeline Bruinton said she saw Alexander running down the street screaming he had been shot.
"I heard all these gunshots pow, pow, pow boom. Pure gunshots coming through the trees and when I came to the door it was mad house at here," Bruinton said.
The third shooting incident happened at the C-Mart gas station on JP Harrison Blvd. just after 4 p.m. Police said Marquez Williams was shot several times; Williams was taken to Vidant Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Wesley Warren, 33, turned himself in to authorities. Warren was charged with attempted murder and is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
C-Mart gas station manager Mo said he tried to break up the fight.
"Out of nowhere they were threatening each other. One guy pulled out his gun and shot the other guy," he said.
