NEW BERN - The MCAS Cherry Point Marine who took reality star Kim Kardashian to the Marine Corp. Ball in Greenville last week is talking about his experience in an exclusive interview with News Channel 12.
Sergeant Martin Gardner, an up-and-coming producer and songwriter who goes by M-Dot, described his story as "rags to riches."
"I was homeless for a good couple weeks after high school," Gardner said. "It was a humbling experience to sit down with someone like Kim."
Gardner said he knew Kardashian was going to be his date months before the ball, but could not tell anyone. The date came about through an e-mail to Kardashian, in which Gardner introduced himself and invited Kardashian to the ball.
"During the time, I was deployed in Guatemala," Gardner said. "Right before I left, I got an e-mail that she was going to come. I was shocked. I was amazed actually that she said yes."
Gardner said Kardashian spent the entire night at the ball, and the two talked about the entertainment business. The Marine said meeting Kardashian gives him confidence in pursuing his career in music.
"I consider it a boost," Gardner said. "The first step was when I was 15 or 16 and I said 'this is what I'm going to do.' This is just a boost and I'm thankful for that. I consider (Kim) my lucky charm."
Gardner said his term of duty with the Marine Corp. ends next fall. He plans to move to Los Angeles to pursue a music career.
