TRENTON, JONES COUNTY - A Jones County jury finds a man guilty of murder Friday morning in the shooting death of another man more than three years ago.
Jurors found 55-year-old Dennis Sherwood Lewis guilty of first-degree murder just after 11 a.m. Friday.
Investigators said Lewis shot 62-year-old Edward "Earl" Bell in the face. The victim was found dead outside his home near Pollocksville in January 2011.
Lewis was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
After the trial, Bell's daughter, Jennifer Hughes, commented on the verdict.
"All of the evidence in this case showed with out a doubt, without a reasonable doubt, that this man took my father's life," Hughes said. "I think he's more at peace knowing his family is at peace, knowing justice has been served."
District Attorney Ernie Lee explained a motive, saying a woman had broken up with Lewis and was dating Bell.
Lewis was taken in handcuffs directly to prison. The defense has already filed a motion for appeal. Though, the appeals process could take several years.
"Today's a good day," Hughes said. "I've cried so many tears. I'm not going to shed anymore because... I'm going to celebrate. Is what I'm going to do. Celebrate [Bell's] life."
