A winter storm approaching North Carolina is predicted to bring a variety of precipitation to the state just as people begin their travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say an ice storm warning is in effect for Avery, Yancey, Mitchell, McDowell, Henderson, and the Rutherford, Polk and Burke County mountains through midday Tuesday. Although the ice is expected to turn into heavy rain through Tuesday evening, it's expected the rain will change to snow by daybreak Wednesday, with up to four inches expected near the Tennessee line.
A freezing rain advisory has been posted for 10 counties, with winds in the mountains expected in excess of 45 mph.
To the east, heavy rain is predicted in some spots, with up to four inches possible.
