ATLANTIC BEACH, CARTERET COUNTY - A popular Atlantic Beach hotel, heavily damaged by Hurricane Irene, has reopened.
The DoubleTree, formerly the Sheraton, reopened Tuesday afternoon on West Fort Macon Road. Newport Group, Inc. based out of Augusta, Ga., purchased the property for $4.56 million at an auction in December.
The hotel suffered major damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011, including severe water damage in the interior.
But since the storm, crews have been working on not only repairs, but upgrades too. According to Marty Matfess, the V.P. of operations for Newport Group, crews completely gutted every room and started from scratch.
"There are still things that need to be finished, but we feel we are guest ready on our floors," Matfess said.
The hotel's popular restaurant "Molly's" also reopened. It brought a crowd of people in for the first day.
"We heard they were opening up and this is a place that we always came," Kenny Bradburry, a customer said.
The hotel is now taking reservations online.
