A brake failure likely caused an 18-wheeler to overturn in Duplin County Friday afternoon, troopers told NewsChannel 12.
The accident happened near the intersection of Highway 903 and Highway 50 near Kenansville at about 2:45 p.m. Friday.
According to the Highway Patrol, the 18-wheeler was traveling northbound on Highway 903.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Manuel Tyson, told troopers he swerved his truck to avoid getting too close to a school bus and another car with children.Tyson said he experienced brake failure, causing his truck to overturn.
Liquid fertilizer then spilled from the 18-wheeler onto the roadway. But troopers said the fertilizer posed no danger to the public.
At least one lane of Highway 903 was closed between 2:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Friday as crews worked to clear the wreck and the spill.
The truck driver, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to a hospital, but has since been released, troopers said.
Investigators said they are examining the truck's brakes. No charges have been filed.
