A basketball coach at a Wayne County high school has been charged with indecent liberties with a student.
Investigators have identified the suspect as 59-year-old Glen Isaac Darden, the head coach of varsity boys basketball and an instructional assistant at Eastern Wayne High School in New Hope.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a report on Dec. 12 of the indecent liberties incident, which allegedly happened on the grounds of Eastern Wayne High School. The next day, the student victim told a school resource officer about what happened, deputies said.
This prompted an investigation and led to the arrest of Darden on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office stated. The Clinton resident has been charged with indecent liberties with a student and was issued a $1,000 bond.
NewsChannel 12 reached out to Darden, but he declined to comment. However, neighbors who know Darden are choosing to stand by him.
"I dont think that's something Glen would do," said neighbor Ray Fordwells,. "He's a good guy. He loves his work. Don't sound anything like him to be accused of anything like this. He's a good family man. He's a good church-going man."
According to the public information officer of Wayne County Schools, Darden was placed on paid administrative leave on Dec. 13. But following Wednesday's arrest, Darden's employment status was changed to unpaid administrative leave.
Darden was hired by Wayne County Schools in March 2003, said the district's public information officer. This is his second year as head coach of the varsity boy's basketball team.
