Helene Downgrades as it Hits Mexico

Tropical Storm Helene downgraded to a Tropical Depression as it made landfall in Mexico. The storm is then forecast to continue to weaken as it slides up the coast. As the storm moves farther north Monday and Tuesday, its remnant showers should roll into southern Texas, an area that is still in extreme drought, but has seen some improvement lately. As a tropical storm, Helene is currently producing 30 mph sustained winds.

Out in the Atlantic basin, Gordon continues to spin away from the United States at about 18 miles per hour. Hurricane Gordon is only a category one, and is forecast to downgrade into a tropical storm very early Sunday.

A new batch of showers and thunderstorms about 200 miles off the coast of the Cape Verde Islands near Africa is under investigation. This group of storms has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical disturbance in the next 48 hours.
