HAVELOCK, CRAVEN COUNTY - The man shot at a Craven County apartment complex is out of the hospital and tells his story about what happened that day. Havelock Police are still searching for the man responsible.
According to investigators Javon Ward, 22, shot Stev'n Todd, 25, at Kelly Park Apartments in Havelock last Friday.
NewsChannel 12 spoke with Todd just two days after getting out of the hospital, as he continues to recover from five gunshot wounds.
"I'm happy that I'm blessed. I got another chance at life," he explains.
Todd said Ward fired the gun seven times and five of the bullets hit him in both legs, shattering his femur. He said what started out as just a disagreement between him and Ward, escalated into something he said he never saw coming.
"It happened so fast. I heard brakes and I thought I was about to get run over. I turned around just in time and all it was boom, boom, boom, and I saw the barrel," Todd said.
He says his brother held him, trying to keep him conscious until help arrived.
"I felt the first hit but I didn't really think that I was injured and hit as many times as I was," Todd said.
It will be a long road to recovery for Todd, but he said he will get through it with the support of family and friends. Todd said as police continue to look for Ward, his judgment day will come.
"Whenever he is ready to take his punishment, that time will happen," he said.
Ward is described as being about 6'1'' and 200 pounds. According to police, the suspect has several tattoos, the word "Savage" above his right eye, a tear drop near his left eye, and the letters "MOB" near his right eye.
Investigators said they believe Ward is hiding in the Newport-Havelock area and is armed with a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used during the shooting. The suspect has a history of running from authorities, assault and weapon charges, according to police.
