GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY -

K-9s at the Greenville Police Department are getting some new gear. They will now wear bullet and stab-resistant vests.

A grant given to the Greenville Police Department has allowed them to outfit each dog with a custom vest.

NewsChannel 12 talked with Officer Chad Bowen, who said these dogs are often on the front lines. He credits his K-9 with saving his life while on duty.

"Having these vests afford them a bit of protection to at least stand a chance against someone who may have a knife or a gun or any kind of weapon," Bowen said.

The vests cost about $900 per dog. A vest for a human costs about $600 to $700.
